Oakley Dental – What Are Dental Implants?

Smiling Woman

At Oakley Dental, we offer a number of reconstructive procedures for badly broken or missing teeth. One of the most popular and effective of these procedures is the dental implant. Read on to find out what these are, and how they might work for you.

Dental implants are a natural-looking, effective and permanent fix for those with one or more missing teeth. This dental procedure involves making a new synthetic tooth and affixing it directly to the jaw, complete with a sturdy titanium root that acts much in the same way that the roots of the rest of your teeth do.

Due to the permanence of this treatment, it is necessary for your dentist to consult with you and take a look at your teeth, and the points where you are missing any, so that they can carefully analyse your particular case and decide upon the best approach for them to take. After this, a new “root” – made of titanium for extra durability – can be fixed to your jaw. The insertion of the root can be done under local anaesthetic, but feels no worse than having a tooth extracted.

The new root is left to heal into its socket within the jawbone. The root then receives a porcelain “crown” to complete the treatment. Crowns are made from porcelain, and delicately carved to look exactly like a real tooth, and to fit naturally into the shape of your smile. The current phenomenal standard of cosmetic dentistry techniques means that it should be impossible for the naked eye to discern which is the crown and which are your natural teeth.

The procedure to fit the titanium root usually takes one session of less than two hours, and fitting the crown takes two visits on average. The process is extremely straightforward.

The most important thing to do if you’re planning to have dental implants is to do your research, and look around for a highly qualified dentist that specialises in the procedure you require. Oakley Dental in Manchester are specialists in cosmetic dentistry and orthodontics, and offer the added comfort of being Dental Phobia Certified – meaning that we specialise in treating patients who experience a great deal of fear going to the dentist. Fitting dental implants is something that the Oakley Dental team of experts do on a regular basis, so there is no cause for concern, but we understand that you need to have absolute assured confidence in us and be made to feel at ease, particularly considering the permanence of this particular procedure. That’s why we’re trained to put your mind at rest and calm your worries before we start.
